I COULD NOT SEE TO SEE

a landscape series inspired by the poetry of Emily Dickinson

A Finished Day

oil on linen canvas

18 × 24cm

I’ve been reading from a book of Emily Dickinson’s poetry and beginning paintings in conversation with her words. There are no titles to her poems as they were sent as letters or in letters, I read; they are condensed enough not to need them. I liked the thought of titling in return using her thoughts on place and time and observation to push a response via colour. It’s my first real glance at her poetry and, for now, this is my reply.
